I am not dead! 'Tis merely a flesh wound! I have been working on a few projects... not to be released under AGP (AGP is dead, though you can still find our PDFs for sale through this link), but to be released elsewhere... someday. Final Subscriber Compensation Deal

Okay, here's the final deal... I now have permission from both Judges Guild and Troll Lord Games to compensate subscribers for their remianing balance with booklets (and other remaining stock).

First, I will finish sending all copies of Campaign Installment #2 to all subscribers.

Only then, after all copies of CI#2 have gone out, I will start sending out refunds and/or booklets to finish out the subscriber balance.

I will make sure to check with each and every subscriber to see what he or she wants to do as the option for their final compensation.

Booklet compensation will be on a cash MSRP basis (based on the prices the booklets were to have on March 1st, 2010, after the scheduled price increase), not on a subscriber-page credit basis. Thus, each booklet will cost the following in remaining subscriber funds:

Note that you are not charged anything for shipping, as that was already figured in the cost of the subscription.

You will be able to choose any of the above (again, predicated on limited quantities of XXXI and the 2008 Jam) in any combination for your refund; you could choose all different booklets, or multiple copies of of one booklet, such that the cash total is no greater than your remaining subscriber fund. Remaining funds after all booklets have been chosen will be refunded in check form in the same shipment with the booklets.

You should know what the cash value of your balance is from the e-mail I sent out before I started sending out Campaign Installment #2. If you do not remember it, you will be reminded of your total when I contact you when your turn for your refund comes up.

Hey all,

Sorry for no reply earlier. I've been taking the whole month of April off from anything AGP related, which includes pretty much all gaming forums... thanks to Plaag for letting me know about your questions!

As to subscriptions, as I stated on the AGP blog, remaining subscriptions will be honored in the following fashion:

First, all those who have not yet recieved Campaign Installment #2 will get that mailed to them as my finances permit; then, after all remaining copies of CI#2 have been shipped, remaining subscription balances will be refunded in subscriber number order, again, as finances permit.

And as I said there, it might take some time. After two and a half years of trying to make AGP work financially (and failing miserably), and after six months of my wife being unemployed (and still remaining unemployed), my finances are in a shambles. As mentioned elsewhere, I finally have a job, working for the Census, but it is a limited-time position, obviously (no more than eight weeks).

If I'm lucky, I'll be able to use funds from that job to print and ship out all the remaining copies of CI#2. After that, the rate of refunds will depend on the job(s) I am able to get after the Census runs out.

Every subscriber WILL get a refund. It WILL take time.

Some subscribers have written requesting that their remaining subscription balance be taken in booklet form. Right now, that is not possible, as I have turned over the copyrights on all my products to either Judges Guild or Troll Lord Games. However, enough subscribers have requested this that I am considering asking them to allow me to make these limited runs.

However, if I do, the booklets will have to be taken out of remaining subscription funds on a cash basis (based on the MSRPs the booklets would have had starting March 1st, had I continued with AGP), rather than a subscriber-page-credit basis that was in effect before I closed the company. At these rates, most 1/2 year subscribers with un-tapped sub value should be able to get one each of most of the books; those with a full year sub with un-tapped sub value should be able to get a full set, with several extra copies. But I don't know yet exactly, as I haven't tallied the full values at the new MSRPs... and again, this is all predicated on getting permission from Judges Guild and Troll Lord Games (not that I anticipate any difficulties there).

So... one way or another, sooner or later, all subscribers WILL get CI#2 and (definitely later than sooner) WILL get their subscription balances either refunded in CASH or, possibly, in product.

I hope that helps to somewhat alleviate your concerns.

Adventure Games Publishing is Closed

It is with great regret that I announce the closure of Adventure Games Publishing. Print product sales end immediately. PDF products remain available on the AGP DriveThruRPG site through the end of March, then migrate to either the Judges Guild or Troll Lord Games sites on DriveThruRPG (those of you who already purchased them will continue to be able to download them). After that date, Judges Guild and/or Troll Lord Games might continue to make print versions of these products available or not; that is their call, not mine. As all the details about the transfer of properties are still being worked out, please do not inquire after them about these items for several weeks after the transfer.

Subscribers will, over time, first have their final Campaign Installment shipped (100 Street Vendors of the City State, etc.), then as money becomes available, have the remainder of their subscription funds refunded. Subscriptions will be refunded in numerical order by subscriber number.

The decision to close AGP was neither easy nor quick; it has been brewing in my mind for a long time. It is the end result of far more mistakes being made than successess being earned. At one point a good friend, who knew of my work on Comics & Games Retailer, asked me point blank why I did not take the very good advice I dished out in that magazine. I still do not know why myself.

The closure is, essentially, the final result of ever fewer sales on each new product, both print and PDF, such that at this point, I'll end up paying people to take my next product. 100 Street Vendors of the City State, barring a handful of sales of Noble Knight Games, sold a grand total of three print copies. Yes, you read that right, three copies. The PDF sales were not much better, a grand total of 13 copies sold as compared to 15 copies being taken free by reviewers (and many, many thanks to the two of you who have actually posted reviews!)

As though the dreadful sales on what I considered to be my best, most tied-in work of the Wilderlands was not enough, this is also tax time, and looking over the results of the prior year was most educational. The end result, even after pinching every penny and keeping all expenses down to the bare minimum, was a grand total net income such that I earned a total of less than $2 per hour for all my work on AGP in 2009. Were this simply a sideline to a full-time job, that would truly be a nice result. As this is supposed to be my "day job," that result is, as we call it, a "reason to quit."

And so we are done. A few things:

If you wonder why I don't keep print sales open for the remainder of the month, it is due to the simple fact that at this point, even if I get good sales, all my profits from said sales could all too easily be wiped out on the purchase of the ink to print that last book (as ink for my printer runs $100 per cartridge). So any final sales of print products could be counterproductive rather than profitable, and there is no way to know until the final book is printed.

I still have a box and a half or so filled with copies of XXXI and 2008 Wilderlands Jam, as well as two HUGE boxes of Campaign Map 18: Southern Reaches. Rather than simply destroy them, one of these days I'll eventually get those to Bob Bledsaw at Judges Guild; he will sell them as he sees fit. As all other booklets are either sold out or were only printed on order, that is the last remaining stocks from AGP (no wondrous warehouse finds to be hand a decade or three down the road).

Adventure Games Publishing is unlikely to return; I plan to altogether put it in my past, and put my past behind me. Eventually, six months, a year, or two years (or more) down the road, depending on how long it takes the burns and wounds to heal and be forgotten, I will return to writing, likely as a hobby (writing for Fight On! perhaps), then later, maybe, for other publishing... But first I need to return my hobby where it belongs, to that place in my heart where it is a hobby.

This blog, Adventures in Gaming, is also going to close. It is too tied in with AGP in my heart for me to continue forward with it. A month or three from now, I will return to blogging, but elsewhere. For those interested in following whatever shall follow, I will certainly post here to let them know where they can find me.

Adventures in Gaming and the Adventure Games Publishing Catablog will remain up; I have no plans to take them down. Let them remain as historical artifacts.

I could get into the whole "what's going on with the Adventure Game Industry and how it applies to AGP," but frankly... I really don't care anymore. It seems the Adventure Game Industry has had enough of me, and I have finally had enough of it... and so it is time to move on.

Wilderlands Journal #1 Call for Article Ideas

Okay folks, here's the dealio...

I always wanted Adventure Games Journal to be more of a general game magazine rather than a magazine dedicated to the Wilderlands. However, I have a bunch of small, fiddly articles about the Wilderlands that do not qualify for a full booklet or even PDF of themselves... so I will be launching the Wilderlands Journal, the "stepson" of AGJ, as soon as I compile 24 to 36 pages worth of such articles.

Such articles are written in between the "big stuff" I'm working on right now or "devolve" from booklet ideas that don't wuite make it to full growth. Each issue of the WJ will be published when the "slush pile" gets big enough.

Now I need you to tell me... what do YOU want to know about the Wilderlands that will fit in a small article? I know what I want to write about, but I want to make sure the journal appeals to a wider interest base.

And yes, this will be a Subscription item, almost needless to say!

Quest for the Paper Cutter

Hey folks,

A number of you have asked why I don't trim the right-hand edge of the booklets. Simple answer to that is that I do not have a paper cutter. I have checked with local printers, and the best price I could get on bringing in my books for them to trim is insanely high ($1.00 per booklet!) As I live in a small village in the middle of nowhere, there's not much competition to drive this price down...

So the only way for me to be able to trim the booklets is to buy a paper cutter. Unfortunately, with a booklet, you can only trim it when it is folded, as the rippling of the pages only happens when the book is trimmed. So the page count of the trim on the booklets is effectively doubled, i.e., a 24-page booklet of 6 sheets of paper actually counts as 12 sheets for trimming purposes. Most hand paper trimmers you can find in Staples and Office Max handle a maximum of 15 sheets at a time, and with 64-page booklets, I need a paper cutter that can handle 32 pages at a time. Unfortunately, from 15 pages, the next jump up is a heavy-duty industrial-grade guillotine paper cutter (apparently, paper cutters have not caught up with home-press technology). A paper cutter of this sort costs between $100 and $150 (not counting shipping), and that's on eBay, where you pays your money and you takes your chances. So a paper cutter would be a $200 expense when, right now when my wife and I are unemployed, every penny counts just to pay the rent and utilities.

As I've already sold or auctioned off all of my game collection that I can without cutting into the materials I use in design work, and every penny from sales is needed to either pay for printing and shipping subscriber products or for things like food and rent, I'm at an impasse. I want to trim these booklets, and my customers want trimmed booklets, so the only way I'm going to be able to get one of these paper cutters is by asking for donations.

I can't provide anything material in return for these donations; what I can do is include a line thanking those who donate toward the paper cutter in each booklet going forward. The line will read:

"Many thanks to [Names] for their generous donations toward the paper cutter that trimmed this book. Think of them as you easily flip through the pages of this volume."

AGP Frequently Asked Questions

This is where our Frequently Asked Questions will be found, once I get around to posting answers to them...

Q: Who are you guys?
A: There is no "we guys" at AGP, at least, not yet, in any serious fashion. From the start AGP has essentially been a one-man operation, that one man being me, James Mishler. Art and graphic design, though, has been in the hands of Peter Bradley, who also does a lot of work for Troll Lord Games. I also have some assistance from time to time from my lovely wife Jodi, who helps me fold and staple the booklets at home.

Q: Is the Wilderlands of High Adventure the same thing as the Wilderlands of High Fantasy?
A: Yes and no. The Wilderlands of High Adventure (WoHA) is based on my personal Wilderlands of High Fantasy (WoHF) campaign run over the last 20+ years. WoHA products are not "official" WoHF products, but they are 95%+ compaitble. The WoHA is very similar to, but distinct from, the WoHF in many, many minor respects and also in many major respects. A list of major differences will be listed below at a later time. However, with the Wilderlands, a campaign is only ever what the Judge wants it to be, so you can pick and choose from any published version of the Wilderlands to create your own campaign.

Q: How are you able to publish and sell products set in the Wilderlands and use Castles & Crusades?
A: I have a license with Judges Guild to publish products using the Wilderlands as a basic campaign framework. Similarly I have a license to use the Castles & Crusades trademarks and proprietary (i.e., non-OGL) materials. Both licenses are non-exclusive, so if you want to publish your own Wilderlands and/or Castles & Crusades products, you should check with Judges Guild and Troll Lord Games, respectively, to see if you can get a license.

Q: Why aren't your products available in retail stores?
A: Actually, my products are available in two retail stores. AGP products are carried by Noble Knight Games and Chimera Hobby (Appleton). We welcome inquiries from other stores, and have special wholesale terms for proven (i.e., licensed) retail venues. Unfortunately, due to the state of the Adventure Game Industry's distribution network, we cannot affordably offer our products through standard distribution.

Q: Why are your prices so high, relative to other publishers? I mean, I can get a full-color book from [publisher] for only a few dollars more than you charge for a small black and white booklet!
A: Scale, essentially; I'm a small, one-man bootstrap operation (with neither boots nor straps, to be frank). I cannot afford to publish hundreds, let alone thousands of copies of books in China or elsewhere in order to get a break on printing costs and hope that they sell... every product I print must sell. And as in-home printing has not yet reached the point where full-color glossy books are an option, I print what I can. And frankly, it is the content that matters; you will find that dollar for dollar, you are getting as much ore MORE actual content from my books than you get from higher-priced glossy full-color products... for which you pay more just because they look pretty.

Q: What's up with Adventure Games Journal?
A: Adventure Games Journal (AGJ) is on hiatus. I want to make AGJ a more general adventure games magazine, and right now, with the current economic situation, that's just not viable. So I am concentrating on publishing core WoHA products. AGJ's Wilderlands articles, i.e., small notable materials that are not worthy of a booklet themselves, will be published in the Wilderlands Journal, an irregular booklet with numerous unrelated yet useful and interesting Wilderlands-based articles.

Q: What happened to the subscription program?
A: After my long hiatus from publishing, I decided that I made a great mistake in jumping in first with a subscription program that I had not proven that I could fulfill. So for now, the subscription program is suspended; I do not want to take anyone's money beforehand when I am not certain that I can fulfill my end of the bargain. Maybe, when I have fulfilled my obligation to my current subscribers, I might start up another subscription program... possible, but frankly, not at all likely.

Q: Where is your release schedule?
A: I do not have a release schedule. At the beginning of this effort, I tried just that; spectacular failure resulted when things fell behind, then plans changed, and I went on the long hiatus. So I no longer have a release schedule, and I try not to even announce a product until I ahve it ready to print.

One thing I will say... this is the LAST "100 This, That, or The Other" books I am going to be doing for quite some time! They definitely fall under the "biting off more than you can chew" category. This sucker is 64 pages, the high limit of want I can print with home publishing, and is at 8-point font throughout! At that rate, it is easily the equivalent of a 48 to 60 page normal-sized book by word count. From now on I am going to limit myself a bit more on how much I pack into a booklet... 32 to 48 pages at the most, or thereabouts, with 10-point font. Never say never, but...

September AGP Status Report

The short of it is that we have been doing what we can to "right-size" the company and our products for the current state of the market and the economy.

We will continue to have full-size products, notably Adventure Games Journal, which, going forward, will be 8.5" x 11" (ideally perfect-bound though maybe saddle-stitched, depending on page count) format with full-color cover. A few other major products will also be of that size.

But most products will be released as 5.5" x 8.5" digest booklets, from 20 to 64 pages, usually with 8 to 10 point font and minimal illustration (i.e., clip art)... and as you can see, we've started this program with a BANG, as we released 11 digest booklets all at once yesterday!

And with the digest booklet format, if I get the hankering to just write up a Wilderlands Village, Castle, Ravaged Ruin, or a dozen Lurid Lairs, I can, and get it published in a weekend… and there are some products in the On Hold folder that could be moved to the Working folder for completion, such as the Southern Reaches Gazetteer…

So while we’re still not at full bore, we are definitely building momentum!

100 Encounters & Treasures — Level 1 provides the Castles & Crusades Castle Keeper with 100 ready-made encounters and 100 ready-made treasure troves for use in any campaign. The encounters and treasures included on these tables are designed to be challenging for parties of three to eight characters where most if not all characters are 1st level. If you need an encounter for 1st level characters, or treasure trove for a creature with a Treasure Type 1, simply roll d100 and consult the table!

For encounters, a range of numbers of creatures encountered is included; the low end for smaller parties (three to five characters), the high end for larger parties (six to eight characters). Note that some encounters are designed to be rather tough; however, at some point early in their careers all characters should learn that discretion is the better part of valor and that it is better to run away to live and fight another day!

Examples of encounters include:

#13: Skeletons — (2-12) N Medium Undead (Com.); 1d12 HD; HP: 3x12, 11, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5, 2x3, 1; AC: 13; Move: 30 ft.; BtH: +1; Attacks: 2 Claws (1d3) or Weapon; Special: BS 120 ft., Undead; SV: P; Int: None; TR: 1 each; XPV: 10+1/hp each. There is a 25% chance that a skeleton will be armed with a random melee weapon, and a 1% chance that it is a magical weapon of random sort.

#40: Acolytes (Humans) — (2-12) AA Medium Humanoids; 1d8 HD; HP: 2x7, 3x6, 4, 4x3, 2x2; AC: 14; Move: 20 ft.; BtH: 0; Attacks: Weapon; Special: Turn Undead; Spells: three 0th and two 1st level cleric spells each; SV: P; Int: Average; TR: 1 each; XPV: 9+1/hp each. All the acolytes will be of the same alignment and faith. Acolytes are usually armed with mace and sling, and wear ring mail and carry a medium wooden shield. If there are 10 or more acolytes, add a Priest with 3d8 HD, 12 HP, AC 15, BtH +1, TR 3, Spells: four 0th, three 1st, and two 2nd level cleric spells, and XPV 76. The priest usually wears a mail shirt and carries a medium steel shield. In addition to any other treasure, the Priest has a 15% chance of wielding a magical +1 weapon, a 15% chance of wearing a magical +1 mail shirt, and a 30% chance of possessing a potion or scroll of cure light wounds. There is a 50% chance that 1d6 Men-at-Arms (HD: 1d8; HP: 8, 7, 5, 4; AC 15; Move: 20 ft.; BtH: +1; Attacks: Weapon; XPV 5+1/hp each) serve the clerics as guards and pack bearers; these men are devout members of the faith, and are only as corruptible as their faith allows or requires.

#60: Medium Giant Spiders — (1-4) N Medium Animals; 3d8 HD; HP: 18, 16, 15, 10; AC: 15; Move: 30 ft., 20 ft. Climb; BtH: +3; Attacks: Bite (1d6 + Poison); Special: DV 60 ft., TV, Poison, Web; SV: P; Int: Animal; TR: 2 each; XPV: 52+3/hp each.

And here are some example treasure troves:

#18: A small sack (1 sp) contains 33 gp and a potion of cure light wounds (300 gp).

#35: An ivory draughts board (250 gp), 12 gold playing pieces (10 gp each) and 12 silver playing pieces (1 gp each), each piece depicting a dragon of the appropriate color, all contained in a specially-designed cedar case with gold and silver inlay depicting battling dragons (125 gp).

#61: Seven large sacks each contain 491 cp, 68 sp, and 5 gp; the fourth sack contains a crown of silver with a gold centerpiece in the shape of a lion rampant (500 gp).

#94: A small wooden chest contains 83 cp, 300 sp, 34 gp, seven pearls (25 gp each), and a magical hand axe +1 (1,000 gp).

Never get caught rolling up a whole treasure trove when a single roll will do the trick!

Curses and More Curses provides the Castles & Crusades Castle Keeper with 200 unusual and interesting curses. These can be bestowed upon player characters through mischance and misfortune or used by player character clerics and wizards on hapless non-player enemies. While designed for use with Castles & Crusades, the curses are easily adapted to any fantasy role-playing game system.

Few of these curses are of the immediately deadly sort, save perhaps to 1st level characters; they are all designed to fall within the parameters set by the bestow curse spell, the reverse of the remove curse spell which is useable as a 3rd level clerical spell or 4th level wizard spell.

Examples of curses include:

#1-16: Curse of the Bull’s Eye: The accursed one becomes a target for any enemy archer within range, even if much better targets are available, and all arrows and crossbow bolts aimed at the accursed one gain a +4 bonus to hit.

#1-30: Curse of the Ogre-King’s Nose: The accursed one’s nose grows to the size of a goblin’s head, regularly dripping gobbets of mucus and making hideous snorting sounds, making it very difficult to eat or speak (requiring a Dexterity save to do any of these), and especially to cast spells with a verbal component; 25% chance to miscast and lose any spell that has a verbal component. Needless to say, it is also quite a social problem, and anyone who tries to sleep nearby will fail utterly as the accursed one’s snoring is of deific proportion (though oddly the accursed one never notices it)! Even if the nose is cut off, it regenerates and expands within moments.

#1-48: Curse of the Crimson Claws: The accursed one’s hands are transformed into large, crab-like claws of thick chitin. She cannot hold any tools or weapons, and cannot cast any spells requiring a somatic component. Rogues and the like cannot climb, open locks, pick pockets, or perform any other abilities that require fine motor skills of the hands. Even using a door knob requires a simple Dexterity check! The accursed one can attack with her claws, one each round, though she is considered non-proficient with the attack, and deals 1d3 points of normal damage with each hit.

#1-97: Curse of the Beggar’s Bait: Any beggars the accursed one encounters recognize the accursed one as a generous type and easy touch, especially if the character most certainly is not. The accursed one rapidly acquires a following of entire mobs of beggars following him, asking for alms and assistance. Even wholesale slaughter does not deter the beggars in their quest for spare change; they follow their charitable hero wherever he goes, a great unwashed mass of hunger and privation, never once able to provide any sort of assistance to their “savior.”

#2-16: Curse of the Noxious Noma: The accursed one's face begins to rot away, with all flesh from the ears forward sloughing off horribly over a number of days equal to the accursed one's Charisma. Every other day of the rotting process he gains a penalty of -1 to any Charisma attribute or ability check or saving throw, to a maximum penalty of 1/2 his Charisma rounded up. As the lips and cheeks are very important in proper speech, the accursed one also develops a severe speech impediment. If the accursed one seeks to convey anything complex, or must cast a spell that requires a verbal component, he must make a level-based Intelligence check with a CL equal to the Charisma penalty, or he fails to convey his meaning/the spell fails. Though it is a painful process, unlike real sufferers of noma, the accursed one does not thereafter die; he lives on with his face rotted away.

#2-30: Curse of Piratical Preoccupation: The accursed one believes himself to be a pirate of the high seas. He speaks only using pirate speak (and now knows it and its intricacies, even if utterly unfamiliar with it before), refuses to do anything else until he is dressed as a pirate and has his equipment stored in a sea chest, seeks out a parrot to wear upon his shoulder and a jug of rum to carry at his belt, and once thusly prepared, makes with all haste to the nearest pirate haven, there to find a ship on which to serve as a pirate. Once upon a pirate ship, he will seem to be the best pirate known to history or legend, able to do feats that others only ever dream (leap from mast to mast, fight sharks bare-handed, etc.). His first goal thereafter is to work the men into frenzy to follow him as their captain, mutiny against the true captain, and then lead the pirate ship into glory, hunting the largest and best-defended prize ship known to sail the seas. Once the pirate ship is engaged in battle with the defenders of the prize, the accursed one forgets everything that happened to him from the moment he became accursed, and in addition, forgets how to swim.

#2-52: Curse of the Danse Macabre: All creatures the accursed one slays rise 24 hours later as skeletons and zombies; these undead never attack, even to defend themselves, for if destroyed, they simply rise again 1d10 minutes later. They reconstitute even if burned, though if disintegrated, they are destroyed permanently. They dance and pirouette, cavort and sashay, slowly but surely making their way toward the accursed one, and when they arrive at the accursed one's location, they dance continual circle around him, calling out his name with their dead voices. If he flees, they follow, forming a long conga line of death and undeath.

#2-98: Curse of Rider's Ruin: Whenever the accursed one rides a horse, donkey, camel, elephant, or similar mount, or uses such to draw a wagon, cart, or other vehicle in which he rides, upon the accursed one dismounting from the steed or disembarking the vehicle, the creature(s) must make a Physical saving throw or die on the spot.

Rules for removing curses and details for including cursed scrolls in treasure troves are also included.

The Demon-Born
CE male Demon-Blooded Sverkka Valonar human 6th level barbarian, HD 6d12+18, HP 62, AC 17 [18 vs. Law or Good, 19 vs. Lawful Good] (+2 magical demon iron mail shirt +1 plus dexterity bonus), Move 30 ft., SL General 4, Str 17, Dex 14*, Con 18*, Int 17*, Wis 9, Cha 11. Class abilities are native arms & armor (Valonar types; focused in broad sword, also proficient with five weapon/armor), primal rage, resilience, savage glory, sixth sense, tribal abilities (Seamanship and four cantrips, see below), Versatility (two 1st level wizard spells, see below). Sven knows the following cantrips and spells, each useable once per day as a 6th level wizard: detect magic, mage hand, message, prestidigitation, charm person, sleep. Sven’s Demon Eye grants him 60 ft. Darkvision and the ability, once per day, to use the following spells as spell-like abilities as though cast by a 6th level wizard: magic missile, scare, and fireball. The effect fires forth from the eye. Through special tutoring from his Demonic cousins, he also has the ability to Decipher Script (Intelligence) as a rogue, though with no penalty to reading arcane scrolls. He wields “Fafnirsfang,” a magical broad sword +1/+3 vs. dwarves (+8 BtH, 2d4+4 points of damage, +10 BtH and 2d4+6 vs. dwarves) and short bow (+6 BtH, 1d6 points of damage, 60 ft. range). He speaks Valonar, Alryan, Skandik, and Demonic. He wears his +2 magical demon iron mail shirt with coif, walrus-skin pants, sea-wolf fur leggings, a thick black belt with demon-faced bronze buckle (worth 10 gp), tall black boots, and a blood-red cape; Fafnirsfang is at his side in a jewel-encrusted scabbard (worth 250 gp), two daggers are in his belt, his bow and quiver of 20 arrows upon his back; two wizard scrolls depend from the belt in scroll cases made from the bones of men (teleport without error on one and sleep and detect thoughts on the other); and he carries 17 gp, 8 sp, and 12 cp.

Tall and bean-pole thin, Sven Red-Eye stands 6’4” and weighs only 185 lbs. His muscles are mighty but wiry, and his hands, feet, and nose are overly large for his frame. Sven’s left eye is twice as large as his right, bulges forth from the socket, and is demonic in form, with a glowing red pupil, yellow iris, and black orb; his right eye is normal, with the deep purple iris common to sorcerous-blooded Sverkka. His skin is bone white and his hair is platinum blonde, long, and worn in dreadlocks. His fingernails are thick, long, and naturally ebon black, his tongue and lips are naturally purple, and his teeth are naturally sharp and jagged like those of a shark. He is 21 years old.

Sven Red-Eye was born upon a cold peak wreathed in blue flame in the mountains above Malikarr on Thrinakia Isle; it was a clear and starry night, when Luna hid her face, Gorm glittered bilious above a blood-red sea, and Ioun hung full low upon the horizon, dropping his blessings and curses across the lands. Wolves and demons howled in the night as his mother, a witch dedicated to the service of the Demon Gods, cried in ecstasy at her birthing pains. Never known by man, she birthed the child of a demon, or rather near-demon, her son being born of the blood of her demonbrood lover.

Unfortunately for her, for some unknown reason her son was not born true demonbrood, merely demon-blooded, and as her child drew his first blood with his sharp fangs suckling at her teat, her demonbrood lover fled in disgust. Her vile joy turned to utter hatred, and thus she raised her son to seek vengeance upon his father for abandoning her.

She taught him various things arcane and magical, while various charm-held lovers and thralls taught him the ways of sword and spear, ship and sea. When he stood man-tall, she sent him forth as the leader of a ship of foul pirates and sellswords, to make his way south to the Demon Empires, there to seek out his father and wreak her vengeance upon his sire.

That was three years ago, and in that time Sven has crossed the Wine-Dark Sea, Silver Sea, and Sea of 10,000 Islands a dozen times, raiding and plundering as opportunity permits. He has visited the ports of the Demon Empire seeking his father, to no avail, though there made contacts with other demonbrood and demon-blooded favorable to his cause (for his father has no few enemies), and they taught him better use of the magic permeating his demon blood. His ship, the Vengeful Hag, now bears a demon prow in place of the traditional Sverkka dragon, and his crew is now a mix of cutthroats, murderers, and blasphemers from every port in the Wilderlands.

Sven is in no hurry to find his father, having thrice the lifespan of a normal man; he will seek him out eventually, for his “inheritance” of wealth and magic, if not for his mother’s sake. Meanwhile, he enjoys ravaging and pillaging his way across the Wilderlands wherever whim directs him. He is currently active in the Wine-Dark Sea between the City State and Tarantis, despised and hunted by the authorities, feared and respected by the native pirates.

AGP to Release Print Products in Classic Booklet Format

Due to demand by fans for Adventure Games Publishing's Wilderlands and Castles & Crusades products in print, AGP will release print products in classic booklet format.

Each 5.5" x 8.5" booklet will range from 16 to 64+ pages using 8 or 10 point font for the base text. Paper will be of standard 20# quality, usually with a higher-weight cover. Cover stock colors will vary based on whichever cover stock paper we can get on sale during that print period. All booklets will be printed in simple black and white. Page counts include the 4-page cover (front cover usually including a TOC, inside covers feature the OGL, credits, and fine print, and the back page featuring a Booty List).

The first product to be offered in this "classic" new format will be Monstrous Menaces Compendium 1-5, a 44-page booklet which includes all 15 monsters from the five Monstrous Menaces PDF releases. MMC1-5 MSRP TBD, and will be available shortly.

All existing PDF products not already available in print will soon be made available in booklet format (and some that are available in compilations will be made available separately in booklet format, such as the Sorcerers and Warrior-Mages products). Going forward, all AGP products other than Adventure Games Journal will be published in this format; AGJ will continue to be published in full, 8.5" x 11" full-color cover format, likely perfect-bound due to the increased size of each issue (96+ pages).

Booklets will be printed, hand-folded, and hand-stapled at our home offices as they are sold, so depending on order quantities, scheduling, and printer issues, shipping might take a week or two... please be patient!

Unfortunately, under current market conditions, offering these kinds of products -- even in compilation format, in full-sized, full-color cover fully-illustrated format -- is simply not viable, so we seek to return to the classic booklet format as a way to enable our customers to get our products in print.

Customers who are still owed subscriber credit can purchase these booklets using said credit at a discounted rate of 50% page count. Thus, a 36-page booklet counts as only 18 pages when using subscriber credit, with free shipping! However, we must request that subscribers wait until all products are available in booklet format before ordering using subscriber credit, as shipping each booklet individually as they are made available would incur crippling shipping costs.

[AGP06005] Monstrous Menaces 5

Adventure Games Publishing presents the fifth in a series of new monsters for the Castles & Crusades Castle Keeper to populate his dungeons and wilderness. Each installment of the Monstrous Menaces series presents three new monsters for a mere dollar, eminently affordable in today’s economy.

The fifth installment, Monstrous Menaces #5: Chupacabra, Felpha, and Olgoi-Khorkhoi, presents the Castle Keeper with a 3 HD Monstrous Humanoid, a 5 HD Aberration, and a 1 to 6 HD Magical Beast. Each entry includes complete listings for the monster’s description, organization, ecology, treasure, range, and special abilities.

Chupacabra
A chupacabra is a small humanoid creature, about the size of a halfling or goblin, with lizard and canine-like features that much resemble that of a kobold (though there is no relation between chupacabras and kobolds). Chupacabras have large, dull black eyes, gray to green skin, and large clawed hands and feet, though these last are relatively weak and are not used in combat. A long row of sharp spines runs down its back; again, these serve to make the creature look more fearsome, but do not serve any useful purpose.

Felpha
This creature takes the form of a three-foot diameter, pinkish-tan, warty fleshy sphere, looking not unlike the hairless skin of a human sans muscle and bone, blown up with hot air — a balloon made of human flesh, essentially. It has five human-like, ugly, pinched, and androgynous faces, each facing a different direction along the equator of its body, each complete with two eyes, nose, fang-filled mouth, chin, and two ears. A thick cluster of dozens of five-foot long tentacles depend from the bottom, each ending in a trio of finger-like pincers.

Olgoi-Khorkhoi
Otherwise known as the Death Worm, this giant worm-like creature is actually distantly related to the caecilians, and thus an amphibian of sorts, though through magical mutation it possesses abilities more like that of a reptile. Death Worms range in length from six inches to 30 feet, being six inches long per hit point, and one-tenth their length in diameter.

They are limbless, and they appear to be segmented, like a worm, as their serpentine body is divided by ring-shaped folds; thus the confusion as to its true nature, as it physically resembles a giant worm. Its head is covered with thick, bony plates that it uses to push through soil and even stone with greater ease; these open wide in a four-pointed star fashion, almost like razor-sharp mandibles, to reveal its fanged maw. Coloration is a brick to scarlet red, with the bony head and fangs pure white.

Over time players become complacent, sure in the knowledge that they have encountered every creature in the book and catalogued all treasures to be found. They won’t be so certain when the judge pulls out a new book of 32 pages of monsters and treasures that they’ve never seen before!

Monsters & Treasures of the Wilderlands 1 includes 27 new monsters designed for use with Castles & Crusades and the Wilderlands of High Adventure. Running the gamut from pesky 1 HD faeries to fallen 15 HD demi-gods, each monster includes details on ecology and society, powers and treasures. Some are hauntingly familiar, just enough so as to trip up the unwary adventurer, while others are entirely new and created from whole cloth.

Maps are included showing the most common locations these monsters are encountered throughout the Wilderlands and beyond. Though designed for use in the Wilderlands, every monster can find a home elsewhere, and is easily adapted into just about any fantasy campaign setting.

Also included are 16 new treasures, ranging from the least bauble to great and potent (and usually, most dire) relics. Each is tied to the Wilderlands, adding more detail to your Wilderlands campaign, though the histories can readily be altered to suit any campaign.
